Free events for Chinese New Year 2018

Chinese New Year 2018 is upon us and there are many ways to celebrate the Year of the Dog in Metro Vancouver and Victoria with the whole family.

Below are all free family-friendly events to ring in Chinese New Year 2018. From Lion Dances to lantern making, it’s sure to be fun.

Lunar New Year Paper Crafts

Get crafty at Cameron library and make your own lanterns to celebrate the year of the dog. This free children’s program is drop-in. No registration required. Caregivers are required to accompany children under 10 years old.

Lunarfest at Oakridge

Hundreds of sky lanterns will adorn a line of arches in the Lantern of Blessings installation, providing the path to cross over into the Lunar New Year. You can reserve a lantern, then customize it on Family Day with your prayers and blessings for the new year.

Lunar New Year 2018: Lion Dance at the Public Market

Granville Island will celebrate the Lunar New Year with a traditional Lion Dance parade starting at 10:30 am in the Public Market. Follow the lion dancers as they travel to the Net Loft, Creekhouse and Railspur Alley. Take in a Sugar Painting showcase from 11 am to 2 pm, where the artist uses a traditional Chinese form of folk art using hot, liquid sugar to create two or three dimensional figures.

Lunar New Year at Lonsdale Quay

Lonsdale Quay Market will celebrate the Lunar New Year with a traditional Chinese Fan Dancing performance and workshop from 11 am to 12 pm. From 12 pm to 3 pm, they will hold traditional lunar new year’s crafts for all ages which will then be followed by the always stunning Lion Dance blessing throughout the Market, beginning at 3 pm. The God of Fortune will also be handing out traditional Red Envelopes to customers and visitors while supplies last.

Celebrating Chinese New Year of Dog

Celebration of New Year of the International Village marks the start of the lunar calendar, bringing traditional Chinese Spring festivities and rituals to the community of Vancouver, with exhibition and sales booths on both Main and Upper Levels Level showcasing Chinese New Year festive items, souvenirs, culinary delights and gift wares, multicultural live performance on stage, and lucky draw. This three days event includes an opening celebration with a ceremonial opening and lion dance, attended by officials from three levels government, consulates, and local celebrities.

In celebration of Chinese New Year 2018 (Year of the Dog!), Vancouver artists will create artwork on red pocket/lucky envelopes for a one-day art show. Artists have the freedom to use their media of choice, using red envelopes as the canvas. Timed with the Chinese New Year Parade, the art show is right on the parade route.
